Funding
Letter provided by Farshid
- Kathy showed the team the letter that Farshid is using to approach potential sponsors
Concerns from the group:
- U of W is not mentioned anywhere in this letter, Farshid should consider including us, otherwise we can draft different letters
- Not enough motivation is given to the companies to fund us. We would like to provide stronger motives than advertising their logo on our tshirts.
Company List provided by Farhid
- Kathy and Christina will investigate into them (140 companies, ~15 were given to us)
- In addition we would like to compile our own list of companies, focusing on kitchener/cambridge area
WEEF/MEF proposals
Linda discussed proposal and presentation requirements
- The body of the proposal/presentation should contain:
objective, timeline, resources required, background of students involved, justify the need to travel, summary and conclusion
- Key points to mention:
How this project can benefit the school in the future, team is actively seeking funding from other sources
Linda, Anne, Kathy, Christina, and Sam will start drafting the proposal this week
Budget
- Detailed budget is crucial for applications for funding
- Could not be compiled until we receive numbers for lab equipment, and travel expenses, and team size estimate (are we helping to fund the travelling expense of the UofT team? Are we putting our funds together?)
- Patrick will look into possibilities of applying for the Dean's funding with the department of Engineering
Lab Space
- if possible, the team expressed much interest in having at least part of the lab work being conducted here
- Chris will speak to Dr. Charles and other contacts within biology to look into how feasible this idea will be. Update on next week's meeting.
- Lance could potentially be the wetlab trainer
Thermometer Project
Chris expressed possible issues with the current design and would love to seek further clarification We would like to surface our concern as to what we can contribute to this project. Does the model need to be fine tuned? Could we help out with any of the lab work?
Post-Thermometer or Parallel Project)
Everyone will have some ideas that is up for discussion for next week's meeting. Chris shared with us his idea on "glow in the dark bacteria".
Concerns to address
- need to address precisely what the UW team can contribute to the project, aside from fund raising.
- we need to take a stand on how much we would like to initiate in terms of acquiring funds
