Intro

The idea is to use bacteria as a buffer for a specific substance.

Principle

When the concentration of the specific substance rises above a threshold, the bacteria generates something that neutralizes it. When it falls below a certain threshold, the bacteria somehow manages to replenish it. Could be pH, but could be something else, e.g. protein, metabolite, etc... Ideally, this system would be general enough to work with different kinds of substances.

The Stock-based approach

Basic Idea

The higher the concentration of substance A, the higher the rate of converting it so some other product B (stock). The lower the concentration of substance A, the higher the rate of converting stock B into A. This system could be tuned to hold the concentration of A at a specific level.

Possible Extensions

When there is a lack of A and stock B, then there could be active production A.
