iGEM is the international Genetically Engineered Machine Competition held annually at MIT in the USA, see [http://www.igem2006.com igem2006.com] for more information.  We'll be visiting China during December 06 and January 07 to promote the iGEM competition, encourage Chinese teams to take part in 2007 and make contacts with organizations responsible for the development of science and technology in China.  We are inviting Chinese faculty, students and organizations interested in iGEM to attend a meeting at Peking University on Thursday December 28th 2006 or one of the other regional meetings.  We are also offering to visit your university or organization to come and talk about iGEM.

Igem(基因工程机器设计) 是一个一年一度在美国麻省理工学院举行的,关于全新领域 “生物合成“的国际性竞赛. “生物合成“ 是一个融合了生物、工程、物理、计算机科学 和其他多项领域的综合性学科学。

随着我们对生物学、生命的起源理解的加深,我们可以更好的利用其造福人类社会。合成生物学家希望通过了解自然界生物体系的运作机理来创造全新的生物体系。 iGEM就是一项关于基因工程设计的竞赛。

标准生物样本主要存放在MIT。他们收集、保存、测定一些功能未知的DNA序列。例如,一个和特定DNA序列结合的蛋白质或者翻译因子,或者储存在生物体系中的表达元素。

如果我要用特定的DNA序列来构建我的基因开关,我就可以利用这个蛋白质来激发基因转录。着更多的人们贡献DNA和DNA的翻译信息,这个基因库正在不断扩大。

每年MIT都对每支参赛队伍提供全部的DNA样本。 2006年,600 份样本分发给参赛队伍,并且参赛队伍又贡献了400份新样本。在2007年将有1000 份 可利用样本。 所有的样本都可以在网站http://partsregistry.org 找到。

参赛队伍得到的是干DNA样本,然后各支参赛队伍可以利用DNA,将其植入E.coli 来得到他们所需的样本。各支参赛队伍利用暑期设计、构建模型和制造基因工程机器。
