Laina
My name is Laina P. Magaya and a Biology Major at Prairie View A&M University. Currently I am working on in vitro, environmental microbial bioremiodation of metal ions and radionuclides at Prairie View A&M University under the Principal Inevstigator Dr R. Cuero. I have also worked on microbiology techniquies involved in studies of Helicobatcer pylori and using plasmids from E.coli.
Leslie
My name is Lesli Caulfield and I am a chemical engineering senior at Prairie View A&M University in Prairie View, TX. I am honored to say that I have experience in what I want to accomplish. While attending the University of Oklahoma, I was able to become a research assistant, for the summer of 2003, under Dr. David Schmidtke dealing with biosensors and cell adhesion. Here, I worked with and constructed carbon nanotubes (regular and purified), made different types of PDMS mold and stamps, and just various types of lab work. I personally, had fun discovering new things with the four other members of his research team. I had the opportunity to participate in the University of Kansas REU (CEBC) last summer under Dr. Aaron Scurto doing characterization of chiral sulfoxidation using HRP to expand my horizons in environmental engineering. Currently, I am working in a bio-fermentation lab (CEBC) under Dr. Michael Gyamerah with four of my peers. I am studying the growth affects on a strand of E. Coli with different solvents. As one can see, I have a diverse and unique research background. I am interested in Dr. Cuero’s research because it will allow me to not only enhance my research opportunities a bit further, but it will allow the creative side of me to be nurtured and encouraged. Being that he is one of the elite researchers’, I know I will learn a lot from.

Christian
My name is Christian Cruz, I am a graduate student of chemical engineering at Prairie View A&M university. I have been working with Dr. Raul Cuero for the last two years. At the beginning it was difficult for me because as engineer, I did know much about the biology work that was done at the laboratory, like bacteria growth and others. With time and the help of everyone at the laboratory now I am able to do different thing around like RNA, DNA extraction, things that I never thought I would do. Now with iGEM 2006 I see a chance for myself to put in practice all of my engineering knowledge.
